When your home is on the market, and your real estate agent schedules an open house, there are several things you can do to make your Pasadena home for sale– and your open house – stand out from the competition.

“A little something extra can make all the difference,” said Laguna Beach interior designer Deborah Mucillo, who is frequently called upon as an open house consultant.

Here are 10 Great Tips for making your open house something special:

-Use a real red carpet on the steps or pathway to the house – or use bunches of eye-catching balloons to mark the entrance.

-Ask a local home store to glamorize your dining room with a unique table setting, or your bedroom and bath with fabulous linens, in return for some discreet signage. Go to your local Home Goods store to sparkle those areas that need a little staging at an affordable price.

Beautifully Staged Kitchen Island

-Invite a local caterer to present quickie cooking demos to your visitors. This will show off a gourmet kitchen and lend an unforgettably festive air to your open house.

-Make the house seem more like ‘theirs’ by removing your family photos and personal mementos in favor of more generic décor.

-Tout the neighborhood, providing a bound list of notable or favorite area restaurants, clubs, schools, shops and entertainment venues.

-Prominently display recent disclosures or inspection results, such as just-completed paint or plumbing upgrades, termite inspection, etc.

-In addition to sprucing up the Pasadena house, don’t forget to remove the clutter and organize items in the garage.

-Since you don’t know who may have pet allergies, or simply a dislike for animals in general, be sure even the cutest pups or kitties – and their paraphernalia – are away from home during the open house.  Use some plug-in air fresheners like Air Wick and spray some Lysol in the air throughout the home.

-Help with advertising by posting open house notices in your clubhouse, at school and in the local supermarket.  There is no such thing as over promoting the Pasadena open house.  We personally have delivered 100′s of invites to neighbors on many occassions.  People in your neighbood typically know of others wanting to move in.

-Safety is paramount, so lock away all valuables and be sure that keys, prescription medicines and other identifying documents are not around.  Two people hosting an open house is preferable.

Known as “Pasadena’s biggest and scariest”, this is one of the best Halloween events in the Los Angeles area, thanks to its unique underground setting. Located in the heart of Old Town Pasadena, this haunt  is situated in the basement of an old, historic commercial building. In fact, it is held in the oldest standing building in Old Town. Built in the 1880′s, the historic building was constructed over the site of an abandoned California Mission that was annexed when California was bought from Mexico. It is said that prisoners were kept in the catacombs of the old mission, the current underground site for the Old Town Haunt.

Haunted by numerous ghoulish ghosts and angry apparitions, the underground Old Town Pasadena haunt is more than extensive enough to give you your money’s worth.

The haunt is open for a toned down and less scary children’s matinee on the weekends.
