TARANTINO’S PIZZERIA, PASADENA

In business since 1982, Tarantino’s in Pasadena strongly resembles the east coast hole-in-the-wall Italian pizzerias. The red and white checkered tables are intimately placed next to eachother along the brick walls, which are lined with photos of Italian-American celebrities standing next to restaurant owner, Mr. Tarantino himself. The food truly lives up to it’s atmoshere of the quintessential Italian eatery. The New York style pizza is made from handmade dough and a pizza sauce that I am told takes hours to prepare. The restaurant offers a large selection of traditional pasta dishes and Antipasto salads, as well as an affordable list of beer and wine.

If you are a Mexican cuisine connoisseur Pasadena is the place to be. With a wide array of Pasadena Mexican restaurants, from casual take out to fine dining, choosing just a selection of five to highlight is difficult. Presented in order of personal choice are my top favorites.

Mijares Mexican Restaurant
Being family owned for the entire 87 years it has been in business, Mijares is Pasadena’s oldest Mexican restaurant and is still going strong. If you go on the weekend for dinner expect to wait for a table but if you go for their famous margarita’s at the bar you’ll end up keeping the hostess waiting for you when you’re table is ready. Mijares was just awarded in 2008 “The Best of Pasadena” for dining.

El Portal
El Portal is family owned and operated, specializing in Mayan dishes from the Mexican region of Yucatán. Located across the street from the Pasadena Playhouse, many patrons go to El Portal for a night of dinner and theatre. El Portal provides their own entertainment with live performances of Mariachi and Spanish guitar on Friday and Saturday nights.

Paseo Cantina
The live full Mariachi Band and exotic Folklorico Dancers that perform Tuesday through Sunday nights provide a colorful, cultural experience while dining. The Paseo Cantina, located at the Paseo Colorado outdoor mall, provides a basic Mexican menu but they do have a few adventurous regional dishes.

Dona Rosa Bakery & Taqueria
With a fast to-go service, Dona Rosa Pasadena is a great place to grab lunch during the work week, unless it’s a Tuesday when the day’s specials are $1.50 tortas/tacos and refreshing $1.50 margaritas. Dine in at the restaurant for lunch on Tuesday with caution though. You may end up not going back to work.

Cabrera’s Restaurant
Just as the name suggests, Cabrera’s Pasadena is a family friendly restaurant, best known for their well priced lunch buffet which offers a variety of mexican food staples from enchiladas, to chile rellenos, chile verde, shrimp ceviche and menudo.

Hanabi Sushi Pasadena behind the Macy's on Lake Avenue

Located at Lake Avenue and Del Mar in Pasadena, Hanabi Sushi Bar is a Pasadena Sushi restaurant that should be considered a hidden gem. Set behind Macy’s in the South Lake District, Hanabi is perfect place to grab a lunch amongst other business professionals and retail employees, or for a quaint, candle lit dinner. The menu seems to offer a broader palette of flavors when compared to typical traditional Japanese cuisine. The prices are in favor for those on a budget but the menu items are brought to you in the manner of a high end gourmet Japanese restaurant. Although Pasadena seems to provide an array of Japanese Sushi bars, but I highly recommend trying this place out.

A Great Burbank Eatery, Café Colombia

Cafe Columbia located in Downtown Burbank, CA

Downtown Burbank has many great eateries, but if you are willing to venture outside of the norm and off the strip, you will become acquainted with some delicious treasures.  Don’t limit yourself to San Fernando Blvd. because if you head two blocks east to Glenoaks Blvd., you will discover a great spot called Café Colombia. 

This quaint café was established in 1999 and offers both exotic and authentic Colombian food.  The owners decided to provide both traditional and “Nuevo Latino fusion” foods which include variations of soups and staples such as rice, beans, and plantains adorned with Colombian sauces and spices.  The traditional cuisine offers a home-style flavor, comforting the southern California Colombian community while the later attracts Latin food lovers.  If you find you are having trouble deciding what to eat, ask one of the friendly staff and you’ll get a lovely recommendation.  Don’t forget a side of the green soup!  But take a look at the menu, which describes each meal, and you’ll see you really can’t go wrong!  And if you don’t know what something is, ask and you’ll get a lesson on Latin cuisine. Café Colombia is a great place to visit any time of day for any occasion.  Start a breakfast tradition, enjoy a nice two course lunch special, or plan a romantic dinner.  Also serving wine, beer and tropical fruit smoothies, and featuring musical talent on Fridays, Café Colombia is located at 222 S. Glenoaks Blvd., Burbank, CA 91502.
